While cotillions are more focused on teaching young people, typically ages 11 through 13, how to be respectful members of society, debutante balls mark the official joining of society once those children age into young adults.

History: The cotillion is a formal social dance that began in the early 18th century Europe by French royalty. Later it became popular in England among families of nobility and white families in the United States of great wealth, especially in the South.

The season consists of five ninety-minute classes, a five-course Instructional Dinner and a Black & White Ball. The registration fee for the 2024-2025 season is $525. Classes meet monthly for 90 minutes on a Sunday.

Cotillions are offered across the country but primarily in the South, and they culminate in a final session in which parents observe what their kids have—or have not—learned. (This ties to the origin of the word “cotillion,” which used to mean the final dance at eighteenth-century European balls.)
