“Engaged” here probably means “in use”. As in, “the doorway I’m currently standing in” or “the doorway that is engaged in use (by me standing in it or keeping it open)”

@rosakai_ The word "engaged" appears only in the first draft (The Original Scroll, 1951), so either Kerouac or the editor likely found it redundant and omitted it in the 1957 published novel.
